Ketamine Therapy for Anxiety: Does It Work?

When Anxiety Becomes Unbearable

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in Canada, affecting close to 12% of the population. Many people manage their anxiety well with therapy and medication. But for those with severe generalized anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, or anxiety intertwined with trauma — the standard approaches often fall short.

Ketamine’s Effect on Anxiety

The relationship between ketamine and anxiety is nuanced. Ketamine’s primary clinical evidence base is in depression and treatment-resistant depression — but anxiety and depression commonly co-occur, and reducing depressive symptoms often produces corresponding improvements in anxiety.

Additionally, the altered state of consciousness ketamine produces can create what therapists call ‘psychological distance’ from anxious thought patterns. Clients often report being able to observe their fears and worries from a new vantage point — one that feels less urgent and more manageable.

The Role of the Psychotherapist

In ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, the therapist is not simply a safety monitor. They’re an active participant in guiding the therapeutic experience. For anxiety, this means helping clients work with the material that arises — fears, memories, patterns — in a way that is constructive rather than retraumatizing.

Integration sessions following each medicine session allow clients to unpack what they experienced, identify insights, and begin translating those shifts into daily life. This is where anxiety treatment through KAP differs most meaningfully from a simple ketamine infusion.

What Kinds of Anxiety May Respond?

Clients who tend to see the most benefit include those with:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) with a depressive component
  • Anxiety rooted in trauma or adverse life experiences
  • Social anxiety that limits quality of life
  • Existential anxiety or fear related to illness, loss, or major life transitions

Clients whose anxiety is primarily driven by active environmental stressors — a difficult job, a relationship conflict — may not be ideal candidates. Ketamine is not a substitute for addressing real-world problems, but it can meaningfully shift how someone relates to those problems.

Setting Realistic Expectations

We’re honest about this: the evidence base for ketamine in anxiety is less robust than it is for depression. This doesn’t mean it doesn’t help — many clients report significant improvement in anxiety following a KAP protocol — but it does mean we approach anxiety treatment with nuance, clinical judgment, and appropriate humility.

Anxiety treatment requires more than a session.: We design KAP protocols for anxiety with robust preparation and integration components. Reach out to discuss whether this approach fits your situation.
